5 Tips on Setting Boundaries (& Why It's Important!)
AAH, I seriously cannot believe it’s already Thanksgiving this upcoming week. It feels like just yesterday, Brian asked me to be his girlfriend (happy one year to us? LOL). Anyway I know holidays usually denote festive cheer galore, but I’m here to address the elephant in the room – TABOO topics such as POLITICS.
Now, I’m not here to discuss politics. I do believe everyone is entitled to their opinions; however, there is a difference between healthy debates and just downright putting others down blanketed with ignorance. What happens during the holidays is usually the latter, let’s just be honest.
As a woman, an immigrant, AND as a Muslim, I’ve had my fair share of uncomfortable conversations.
It’s fine, I’m used to discomfort, but it wasn’t until recently in THIS political climate where I felt that my identities could be the source of someone else’s view.
It’s one thing to be “hated” for being a shitty human, but it’s another to be hated for simply BEING…. And that is something I cannot get accustomed to.
So here are some of my personal tips to keep the holidays drama-free —
I know this can get difficult, but respect is SO important in these discussions. We all have the right to our own opinions and beliefs, which is why it can get pretty daunting when someone is shoving THEIR beliefs down your throat with zero regard for your stance. With that said, be respectful. Listen and try not to let this hinder you from having a good time.
I know this is something I’m still learning. Instead of continuing the conversation, try and deflect and compliment a side dish instead? I know this isn’t super useful, but personally, I’d much rather discuss recipes over politics. My mantra this year is to focus on pie 🙂
I personally think some conversations should be off-limits during the holidays, but I know sometimes you cannot fight persistence. Engage with the intent of listening and not to argue. The holidays aren’t the best time to try and convince someone why they should vote for Person X or a bill. Nod and simply agree to disagree. We all know these discussions only cause a dreadful atmosphere, and that is not on brand with the holiday theme.
I find that talking about past memories tend to bring people closer together. Ask for the story behind that framed picture in the living room. Keep the conversations light and cozy. While you’re at it, share some fun facts about the holidays and focus on the kids!
Go around the dinner table and focus on one thing you’re grateful for. Focusing on kindness and gratitude could uplift the mood in an instant. Additionally, you and your family could sign up to give back this season. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. Reach out to neighbors who might be spending it alone this year.
It could be anything from playing games to movies or watching a parade and/or football! The holiday season always has something fun to do in the neighborhood plus there is always something on TV (Hallmark channel, cough cough!) What would also be fun is to sign up for a 5K or some kind of holiday run together!
Overall, the holidays shouldn’t be something we all dread. I know our current political climate has caused awkward tensions among families, but if we choose to keep the holidays light, cozy, and fun, then perhaps we’ll all get to enjoy the holidays the way they were meant to be enjoyed, stress-free! It all comes down to what matters to you more — your political stance on an issue or enjoying time with your loved ones.
Happy Holidays to all!
