5 Tips on Setting Boundaries (& Why It's Important!)
The holidays typically symbolize a sense of togetherness, but for some, this may not always be the case. This past Thanksgiving was my first holiday away from home, and it unveiled my eyes in seeing how many people are alone not only during the holidays but throughout the year.
We’re easily caught up in our own busy lives that as understandable as that may be, we disregard those who are alone during such a “together” season. This can lead to seasonal depression, a condition that targets those who are not only physically alone but even those who have people around them yet still feel an internal sense of loneliness. Here are some things you can do to make the most out of your holidays:
The holiday season seems to bring to light many expectations. The media (including socials!) may potentially be the root of the problem, but just know you don’t always have to parallel that same facade!
This is subjective and since I absolutely love writing, I find this to be therapeutic. Writing has not only allowed me to vent, but it has helped me compartmentalize my thoughts allowing for mental clarity. It also helps ground me.
Hallmark, anyone? As cheesy and predictable as they are, they can be enlightening sometimes. They helped me get through finals week, so I’m 100% all for them!
Getting into the holiday spirit could stem from lending a helping hand. Whether it is something as simple as assisting a neighbor with a chore or volunteering at a local shelter, volunteering is always ideal and appreciated. After all, isn’t this what the holidays are all about?
Ever been so busy you forgot to allocate time towards a hobby of yours? Do something fun for YOU. It’ll be revolutionary, I promise.
Being alone doesn’t mean you have to actually feel alone. Calling someone may not be the same physically, but it can most certainly provide a layer of warmth to your holidays and reassure you that distance does not have to mean a disconnect.
Indulge in a sound bath and practice mindfulness. This is also a great opportunity to jot down some intentions for the new year. It is an excellent time to be more in tune.
Drink calming tea or bake some yummy treats. I’d go on Pinterest, find myself a super easy but fun recipe, and put on some Michael Buble to get this baking sesh on. It is the little things that count.
While I have always been lucky to have spent the holidays with my family, I know the holidays can be hard for some. If you’re alone during this time of year, just know that although it can get pretty lonely, you are not alone. You are supported by others even if it may not appear that way at times. Be thankful, be creative, and be intentional this holiday season. And if you have experienced some loss in your life that makes the holidays so hard, embrace those whom you’ve lost and celebrate them for the effect they had on you. Whether or not you’re alone, it is always the perfect time to reflect and move forward with your intentions. There is no one way to do the holidays, so as long as you find time to enjoy your own company amid others, you’re already doing it “right.”
So as cliché as it sounds – eat, drink, and be merry! Happy Holidays, beauties!
